The Scams
There are numerous types of scams including Bitcoin ATM scams, romance scams, wallet hacks, and pig butchering scams.
On average, victims can lose anywhere from $10K - $25K, and some lose over $1M. There is a lack in education on what these cases are, and how law enforcement needs to look at them.
These cases SHOULD be investigated, and there is a known recipe for success.
Bitcoin ATM Scam
A victim received a pop-up notification for a fraudulent charge. They are convinced to send a large amount of money through a Bitcoin ATM.
Romance Scams
A victim meets someone online and forms a bond with that person. The individual eventually asks for money in crypto, sometimes multiple times over a long time-period.
Pig Butchering
A victim meets someone online, or in-person, and is convinced in a short manner of time to invest in crypto. However, the platform that the trading is conducted on is completely fraudulent and the victim is completely unaware for a long period of time. These victims can lose millions.
Change Your Philosophy
Most investigations are about providing justice. In cryptocurrency scams, your mindset must be about retrieving money. The investigation demands speed.
